New questions have been raised about the death of Charles Cochran since my previous posts about it. I started to reply to each one individually but decided readers would be better served by having them all discussed here in one more post about the suicide that still has more questions than answers.

From Michael, in response to Revisiting Charles Cochran:

I believe that the argument isn’t that the murder was premeditated. There are many murders that happen that aren’t premeditated. Although, admittedly, I know next to nothing about this case aside from the news articles and comments, any kind of “fishiness” found in a suicide usually turns out to be quizzical; and this case oozes fishiness. Knowing our police department, this could have easily been an “authoritative power” kill.

The argument then is he was arrested legitimately but officers took things a bit too far and badly injured or killed him, then staged the hanging to cover their butts. This is a plausible argument, and raises further issues that need to be addressed by the GBI or Sheriff’s Office.

The cell where he died had no cameras for “privacy” but there are security cameras in other parts of the jail, so if he was abused outside the cell one of those might have evidence of it. If the SO wants to clear its name they should release any and all tapes from every camera in the jail between the time he was brought in and the time his body was found. Refusal to do so might be an indicator of guilt on their part, or at least an indicator of plain old “don’t give a rip.”

Hopefully the GBI and its autopsy will find any injuries that would suggest mistreatment, but I’m not sure if the GBI can be trusted any more than local law enforcement agencies. Mr. Cochran’s family, if they really feel like something fishy happened, should get a private autopsy – once his body has been turned back over to them it’s well within their rights to have one done, assuming they can afford it or get some donations to cover the costs.

From Michelle, in response to A Hanging Question:

I think that if he did HANG his self they should have took pictures of his body when he was found dead to prove there was no blood…no bruises and ect!!

That’s one thing done during an autopsy; taking photos of the body as part of evidence collection. The SO/jail would not be expected to do that and it is completely proper for them to turn over to the GBI and its forensics lab every aspect of the investigation, including photographing the body.

i know that some family members say when they saw his body before he was laid to rest and checked to see if they could find anything other then the mark around his neck and they did.. his NOSE actually looked like it had been broken…and there was a big bruise on the left side of his face that makeup did not cover up. also a cut right above his lip!

Those injuries might be from mistreatment and abuse, but those alone don’t necessarily prove he was abused or killed. A broken nose, or appearance thereof, could be from attempts to resuscitate him either at the jail or by paramedics using CPR or a ventilator. After death noses often don’t go back to normal shape after being vented. Bruising, nose deformation, and a cut lip could also be related to resuscitation attempts, from his body being cut down in a hurry, or from Mr. Cochran’s violent behavior and restraint before he was put in the cell. An autopsy or rough handling of the body after death could also cause some marks or minor damage.

my question is the 22 year old that was takin to walker county with him that night had also been drinkin but was ALSO booked around 11:30 that night if they wait till the inmates sober up why did she get booked and not him because i know a female being drunk is not gonna sober up faster than a man that weighs alot more than her…

We don’t know that they were equally drunk, or if the girl was drunk at all. The Messenger said she “was also arrested that night where the incident occurred” but didn’t indicate why she was arrested, how she was involved, or if she was drunk/high at the time. If she was sober, or more sober than Cochran, and cooperative, then she didn’t need to sleep it off before being booked.

and also i heard from SOME family members that the walker county sherrifs office never called once or even said IM sorry for the LOSS

I have no doubt of this; officers at the Walker SO aren’t going to call up the dead prisoner’s mom and apologize over the incident. Department lawyers would probably stop any attempt to do so (if anyone wanted to) because that might appear like an admission of guilt or responsibility. I wouldn’t read much into that, it’s just how the world works. Indifference or a lack of concern for the deceased’s family doesn’t equate to being guilty of abuse or murder.

Beyond the comments from Michael and Michelle, six other posts from six other site visitors echoed sentiments found in comments on the Messenger site. However, a closer analysis of those postings reveals some shenanigans: all six were submitted from the same network IP address, meaning they were written within the same building, likely on the same computer, and very possibly by the same person. This suspicion is strengthened by all six users giving obviously fake e-mail addresses and repeating the same basic argument in their comments.

All six comments, boiled down to their essence, repeatedly make the points listed below. The argument is in italic, followed by my response:

  • Cochran was a nice guy. This is irrelevant. Nice people kill themselves sometimes.
  • Other unnamed persons in the jail heard Cochran being abused. Nobody who heard this directly has spoken up. Indirect testimony quoting anonymous witnesses isn’t worth much.
  • The jail and/or jailers are corrupt and regularly beat prisoners. Most people who have been through the jail have probably been treated roughly, pushed around, or verbally abused – but that’s a stretch from being beaten to death and hanged. If prisoners were regularly injured while staying at the Walker jail it would be found out and investigated.
  • He could not have hanged himself if he was restrained. He had to be restrained after arrest and during transport, but officers can’t strap somebody down and leave them in a holding cell all night. If Cochran had been handcuffed or restrained in the cell for 6 or 8 hours he’d be alive today and suing the county for mistreatment.
  • The drunk tank cell has nothing he could have hanged himself from. There is more than one holding cell at the Walker Jail and the description I received indicates there are a few places in them where someone could jam or hang a shirt hard enough to commit harakiri.
  • Jailers could have watched Cochran and stopped him from committing suicide. It doesn’t take long to hang yourself. One or two guards watching dozens of inmates in the middle of the night can’t continually monitor any one prisoner.
  • Cochran’s body had bruises or other marks on it. I think we already covered this one above.
  • The family wasn’t called in to identify his body before the autopsy because the SO has something to hide. In some situations identifying a body isn’t necessary; the officer who arrested him could have done it, or they might have confirmed ID with his drivers’ license. A body only has to be identified once before burial and it could just as well been done at the funeral home instead of at the morgue. An autopsy and investigation had to be done regardless of who the body belonged to, double checking his identity was less of a priority than figuring out how he died.

I think there are some very deep unanswered questions about Charles Lee Cochran that need to be answered, and hope they can be resolved through a full and unbiased investigation. However, raising those questions through fake postings, unsubstantiated evidence, and questionable logic doesn’t help the case at all, and might ultimately obfuscate the truth – or at least make those who question the “suicide” verdict look mentally unbalanced.

Hopefully everything will come out soon, good or bad, and allow the Cochran family to have some peace about this and move on with their lives.

  1. i hope it comes out too!
but how would a broken nose be caused by them trying to recover/save him!
i can understand the part where cutting him down quickly
but from a venalator thats not stronf enough to break a humans nose!

    it just doesnt make sense
and i myself hope the truth comes out
that way Charles family can get on with their lives!

  2. It could look broken or messed up without actually being broken – the vent line stretches out nostrils and can make the nose change shape. Noses are made of cartilage, which is much more flexible than bone (even though it can break). A live person’s nose will take its normal shape back once the line is removed, but someone dead often won’t because there’s no blood flow and etc. I remember seeing a loved-one who had been on a vent for a day at their funeral and his nose didn’t look right.

If he was arrested for fighting with a neighbor, there’s also a possibility his bruises or damaged nose came from the fight BEFORE he was arrested. There are still a lot of variables here that we aren’t aware of.

Thanks for your readership and thoughtful comments.

  3. it wasnt from that night because he did not even physically fight with the neighbor they had only had a few aggressive words with each other.
they never once hit each other anywhere

it could be from the vent.. who knows..thanks anyways

  4. I’ve been hearing some tales from people who have been in the county drunk tank and the abuse has been used excessively. Stories about being picked up and jail employees bashing heads into concrete walls. I even heard tales of EMT workers joining in on some of the beatings. This really upsets me. Why does someone arrested for being drunk have to have the shit beat out of them by the people who are supposed to protect us? I dont want to say too much here because most of the families who have family members who have drinking problems do not want their personal problems public. I’m just saying this is not right and deserves to be looked into more before its too late. I will say this “I dont want to go to jail in Walker County for being drunk.”

  5. Thanks NotaFisdop for your input. I have also heard alot of bad things going on down at that place. I have heard from one guy who just got out of the walker county jail a few months ago which i will not mention his name because of his safety that he told me personally there is one detention officer that is a corporal that works night shift and he has been known to bash inmates heads and break their arms. That is pretty messed up and i hope and pray that this really gets checked out because i know something was done to charles cochran that night. I have heard the same thing about emt workers getting involved too, so i don’t even know you so how are we going to be hearing the same thing. It upsets me to that they seem to be getting by with all of this but i hope with this charles cochran we can finally find out the truth about that place down there. This corporal correctional officer needs to be dealt with who breaks inmates arms because how would he feel if that was done to him. It sure doesn’t make him look big or anything maybe he thinks it does. Hopefully something can be done before it is too late. Maybe if people like us keeps these comments going and trying to find out more then maybe something will get done. I know i am not going to stop trying to find out the truth, because i have a strong feeling something fishy went on down there that night and i think the truth ought to come out on who did it and let them be punished.

  6. I can’t really say anything about Mr. Cochran as I haven’t heard anything except what is on here. But I can say this…..I was in jail from November 2009 til February 2010 and what you say is true. We were not allowed to even breathe his name or they would take commissary away, lock us down and a number of other threats. And I know the Corporal you are speaking of but I won’t list his name here. He believes he possesses more power than he actually does. Another thing I experienced while in there was a “shakedown” but not the normal kind (if there is such a thing). DTF busted in, making us all get down on the floor, on our stomachs while they proceeded to pick certain ones out at random and degrade them. Yelling at them and us, telling a few that they were on meth and they drew their conclusions on how the person looked. Whether they were or not was none of my business but I do know most people look like Hell when they are in jail anyway. They also LOVE to pull their taser guns any chance they get, I guess that goes along with their power trips. 99% of the guards there are ones who got picked on in school and my theory is that they haven’t let those memories go but instead try and make themselves feel better by treating others like crap. Inside the jail, in the cell blocks it came across to me that it was a known FACT that Mr. Cochran was beaten to death and the hanging was staged to make it look like a suicide. But if the guards heard you talking about it, they would take you to the hole. They also fed us uncooked chicken one night….let me rephrase that. It was partially cooked. I do know of one holding cell that has a hole in the ceiling exposing pipes, and someone could very well hang themselves from that. Let’s not forget that it doesn’t take but one hit in the right place to kill someone, causing inter-cranial bleeding, or causing a blood clot to break loose and go to the brain. Those would come to light if an autopsy were done. Yes there are a few guards there that take their jobs a little too seriously but there are a few that are actually good to the inmates.

  7. Thank you DJPhychosis on your input and yes I also heard from someone if his name was mentioned that things would be taken from the inmates, and I know from several people that they have had family members down there at that time and they said that there was word that he was beaten to death so tell me how does all of these same people have the same story, it is just not possible. And that part about them feeding the inmates chicken that is partially cooked is really bad. Yea I know there are probably some good detention officers in there because not all people are evil and bad. You know it doesn’t matter how they were treated in school, they should be getting help for it and not taking anyone’s life because of it. I was told by one person that was being booked the same night charles cochran was taken in down there and that person said they did tase charles and he could hear them begging them to stop hurting him because he wasn’t doing nothing to them. I just hope the corporal detention officer that did this has kids and can live with himself taking this man from his small children. It is just so cruel and I hope just hope this case gets cracked because it won’t bring this man back but it may save someone else’s life. I was told by several inmates that were in there that said they new for a fact that charles cochran was beaten to death and that the hanging was staged. I just hope these people find some way to come forward with what information they have even if it is through comments on the underground or walker county messenger paper. Thanks again

  8. The family of Charles Cochran are the only people that are going to be able to do anything about it and that might mean hiring a lawyer or finding some kind of organization to take your case. It also means organizing and getting statements from other inmates that have been in jail and were in at the same time as him. Talking about it on here is not going to do anything because it just comes across as one family rambling about how their brother/son/cousin died in jail and that they think it was cover up. I am sorry that he died in jail at all, and have my doubts also, but they aren’t going to come forward and they feel nice and cozy in their positions and have enough people to back them. They are just going to say that your family is full of it, and the other inmates are just lying, after all, they are just inmates…get it? I know lawyers aren’t cheap, but start looking around. Find someone that can do those things for your family.

  9. That is the problem they are getting by doing what they want to people down there, and I just hope one day someone goes far enough to get to the bottom of it and I understand the family will have to go further with an attorney if they want to find out anything, but I don’t see a problem with people giving there comments on this and I have my doubts also about what happened down there.

  10. Of course there are no problems, but I am hoping that the family doesn’t think that posting on here is going to get them anywhere other than a few people wondering also. Nobody else is going to go out on the limb to spend their money or their reputation to go after the jail or the officers there. If they want something done, they are going to have to at least start it on their own by hiring a lawyer. Pretty much everything that is going to be said has been said on here, unless a bunch of other people want to start putting together their names, the dates they were in jail, the names of the officers that beat them, etc. maybe a lawyer will pick it up. There probably is some kind of inmate victims rights group that might look at it, but the family needs to do the leg work and start doing it the right way if they want real answers. They aren’t going to get any answers from the GBI any time soon on their own.

  11. I know and I agree with you about people giving their names and dates that they were in jail and things that they know for sure, and yea you are right an attorney could pick up on some of these things and that is what it is going to take and if the inmates that have been down there and things have happened to them may want to find an inmate victims rights group and bring everything out in the open. I just hope that if something went wrong down there that night that it will finally come out, but who knows I guess we will just have to wait and see.

  12. Just for clarification…

B.T. and Debbie are the same person, or at least posting from the same place – their IP addresses match. I follow what you guys are saying but pretending to be multiple people in order to further your argument isn’t winning anyone over to your side. We’d appreciate it if you’d pick a name and stick to it.

  13. I’ll so ahead and say that DJ and Daniel are the same people…..lol I don’t wanna be put on front street, I just changed my name to be a little anonymous….

  14. DJ, changing once is not that big of a deal, but when you have three or four people, or three or four names coming from the same IP address then it gets a little ridiculous. I know they are hurting for their relative, but posting the same thing over and over again under different names isn’t doing them any favors. I am sure there are plenty of people that use more than one name, but they don’t pretend to be different people….

  15. Oh yeah I agree 100%!! Trying to further ones cause by pretending to be multiple people does no one any good. Maybe they have multiple personality disorder, in which case a local message board isn’t the right place to display themselves. Someone needs to let them know that psychiatrists are in abundance in Chattanooga, and one can probably squeeze them in within a weeks time…..I kind of got suspicious when it seemed like 4 or 5 people were listing the same arguments, basically saying the same things.

  16. If you would like to participate in an on going investigation of the wrongful death of Charles Cochran, please send me an e-mail at lawmic01@yahoo.com

  17. I’m not a certified investigator so I can’t participate….good luck with that though!!
